what device (/dev/????) to set the midi port to?

Do a lsmod to get a listing of the loaded modules. If you find your card
with the prefix "snd-" then you're using ALSA. You'll probably find lot
of things so probably a lsmod | grep als-100 will be a better choice, or
at least it will be more understandable.
