Fighting for peace makes a lot more sense that praying for it.
I've usually made symlinks to /usr/lib/pkgconfig/<somepackage>.pc
when I've encountered this. Setting the env variable didn't help I suppose,
can't remember.
Try
ln -s /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig/sndfile.pc /usr/lib/pkgconfig/sndfile.pc
Thanks to you and Patrick Shirkey for suggesting this.
Unfortunately, I still get the same error message. I did compile
& install libsndfile 1.0.4: configure, make, su, make install.
