Brian,
I originally had an ATI Rage card and had to take it out because it
conflicted with my MOBO. The damn thing wouldn't even boot. I switched
to an NVIDIA card and that straightened it out. I listened to some of
your music. What kind of gear/software are you using to do that? I've
never done anything with synthesizers so I'm completely clueless about
that stuff.

Aha, looks like a conflict with my ATI Rage graphics
card, maybe its also
causing come drop outs with my sblive as well (though its not as bad as
the problems with the audiophile card). This makes sense now, with the Ati
Rage and the Audiophile together I was getting xruns every two seconds!

Brian,
I'm running the DSP24 with the envy24 chipset without any problems. I
was somewhat concerned at first due to reports of this kind but I found
a lot of answers (potential answers) on the ST Audio pages.
Specifically :

Their FAQ and Knowledge base are also pretty good sources of info.

Well, I figured out that the culprit to my xrun
problem wasn't my 533mghz
processor, its my envy24 chipset based card, from the alsa wiki:

the cards being IRQ hungry. (VU meter interface?) -- Tobiah"
Given that the evil envy24 chip is in a lot of cards out there, I'm
wondering what cards people have had better results with?
