Hardware puts the controls in the musician's hands and avoids all
the trouble of setting up computers etc. It's just a lot easier to
use and reliable. There's also a hype factor but the same can be
said about software effects.
So, ideally, should the computer be used only to
record and mix, with
all the effects already applied? What if you decide afterwards that that
long solo you played would be better without some effect? You record it
again? Sounds like a lot of work; but then, that would explain the time it
takes to record an album.
The 'lot of work' is maybe what it takes, and you can always record
two or more tracks at the same time, a clean one and any number with
effects applied.
