Well, Ardour has no way to do that. Not for a track, not for a region.
"Make mono" retains a stereo region (presumably with equal content in
the channels then).
Do you want a desktop video to prove it?
Then you do whatever you want with those parts.
What workflow are you expecting?
Anything would be fine for starters.
