Anything facebook connected seems to keep offering me a screen to login
right in front of the page I am trying to read. I can cancel, but it then
comes back a while later. I no longer go to any facebook pages.

Not reading the mail until the end is the no-go. They follow directly
after the google plus link in the very email you quoted.
