You should be able to use noauto in /etc/fstab for the cdrom and at least
stop the CD from being mounted at boot time. I presume that if it isn't
mounted at all, then these programs that are looking for CDs won't run...
Just a guess...
read 'man mount' to see the options available...

Is there a place where I can easily turn this off? I thought I had it
defeated, but every so often my laptop tries hitting the cdrom every few
minutes. It happens on no schedule that I can figure, and can last for a
few hours, stop for a few hours, then start again, without my having
done anything that I can see as having affected it.
