If the mouse still moves then you may be able to try giving a
Control/Alt/Backspace to see if you can restart the X Server and login
again, that does depend on how dead the system is but mouse motion means
that you may also have keyboard control to some extent.

Come to think of it, if the mouse is moving but everything is frozen,
hit Control-Alt-F1, log in to a command line, run (h)top to see what
process is hogging the CPU and kill it, hitting Control-Alt-F7 to get
back to your X session. This will work on almost any distro if your
only issue is a misbehaving X11 app.
