Check out MSG, a synthesis/sampling engine:

It's used by slub - a noisy generative gabba pop band (http://slub.org/) they
use it to play live, triggered with perl scripts mainly I believe.
it's a pretty interesting bit of software anyway.

dying to give csound a good try but haven't succeeded in compiling
it yet, and I've tried cmix but have found it a bit too "low-level"
for my humble tastes. My problem is that most of the interesting
synthesis engines and synth emulators today seem to come with a GUI
and I can't use one, nor do I care to, to be frank. So, does anyone
have a suggestion for a fairly powerful CLI synth engine I might try?
