You might want to try something newer.

Is there an error message after ten seconds?
Unfortunately, no error message. I let aplay sit for over a minute before
killing it.
In theory, ALSA automatically aborts when no data has been transferred
for ten seconds.
What are the contents of /proc/asound/cardX/stream0 when aplay is
running?

Is there any error message in the system log?
I didn't see any errors in the system log... Is there something in
particular I should be looking for in there?
Something like "could not submit ...".
