Yes, I have the record setting checked, but it still is not working. The mixer
(the one that comes with Gnome) has faders, and they do affect the sound
levels.
Is there any way I can test to see if an application is accessing /dev/dsp
properly?

input, shouldn't it be
able to
record it?
What you're hearing is probably just the analog monitor signal form your
line-in. In this case you'll have to actually enable recording from the
line-in. You should be able to do this in any soundcard mixer application.
