Seems like there is a big concern in some genre that one's recording
sounds "as loud as" anyone else's. Leads to a bit heavy handed
compression, I think. Beyond allowances for various redistribution EQ
types, what is being achieved ?
Go to soundonsound.com and look at the "technique" articles. There's a
mastering section in there (though it's much emptier than the other
sections). There's an article specifically about the "loud at all
costs" issue actually.
