Add another hard drive and install new on that. That will give you a boot
that is known working. After the new system is set up you can transfer
projects. Then you have a drive for backup/next upgrade. I am using 3

I am a big fan of using multiple drives or partitions for testing; I'll
often clone a partition with dd, change its UUID with tune2fs, and add
it to GRUB and see what I can break there!
In this case though, I don't think it's necessary if Dave installed from
one of the newer media with systemd enabled (after Oct 13, 2012). Even if
it's older, there's not much that can go wrong that can't be easily fixed
from the emergency console. The system will at least boot that far and then
things like mdadm can be enabled. The migration page at
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Systemd is really thorough and clear.
