Hey James,
I'd advise starting with Python, and a library called "liblo". It has a
dead-simple function
ardoursPortNumber = 3819 # usually anyway!
liblo.send( liblo.Address( ardoursPortNumber ), '/ardour/command/here',
parameter, parameter )

ardour has more OSC
