Ok, so if this is not an ALSA problem at all, then how
do I go about configuring
JACK in this manner? (I suppose there are some command line
commands to run?)

p.s. I did find alsaconf in the KDE menu -
Debian/Apps/System/Admin/Alsaconf
but it wants me to log in as root (not as sudo su) and I don't recall
the password I set...arrg!
It means that Phil's h/w cannot support 1024
frames/period on the
capture channel and/or cannot support full-duplex operation.
Phil - try configuring JACK to use 2048 frames/period, and try using the
-P and/or -C flag to specify playback-only or capture-only respectively.
This has nothing to do with alsaconf.
