Isnt this ('enhanced stereo') part of what the UHF format delivers as
well?

The article here claims the 2 channels UHF-encoding of Ambisonics
signals can be played back with a standard stereo-setup, and achieve
'phantom' images behind the listener as well. Ive never tried, but
would be very interested to hear about experiences from anyone.
i use uhj renderings routinely when mixing ambisonics, and it is indeed
very nice (although it sounds slightly "wetter" than when rendered on a
real surround rig) for listening enjoyment. it also does have a very
wide stereo base, extending past the speakers. sounds quite sensible
when a source is panned full circle, but it certainly does not create
convincing rear perception.
but it is totally unsuitable for serious monitoring if you are
targetting planar or 3d surround and need a precise idea of where a
source is going.
