Yeah, you're probably right :) I was going to use my personal player,
but the screen is quite small. I could probably get one of the $20 ones
with a bigger screen.
Note that the quality concerns of mp3 and laptop soundcards apply even more to
small and cheap mp3-players. They might be good for playing one short snippet
during a theater play or for the background music before the concert. But for
real music during the real show do yourself and your listeners a favor and
drop that idea.
If you really want to play from a small mobile device, try to get hold of a
minidisc player. At least they can work without compression.
IPods have pretty reasonable sound quality. At least for playing back
samples. The ipod touch would work. However getting a playback app that
does exactly what you want may cost some bucks and someone will no doubt
try to steal the device also.
So basically take your big heavy sampler. At least no one will try to
steal it and if beer gets spilt on it then you have less chance of
breakage. Plus it makes you look retro cool and profeshional ;-)
