OK, I've done that. Installing the alsa-driver failed with a cpio error
when unpacking it, but I got alsa-driver-0.9.4.tar.bz2 from
alsa-project.org and built it and installed it from that. It seems to
have installed, though I got a lot (thousands?) of messages during the
build like:

I'm listening to an MP3 now via the USB device under XMMS. As before,
the sound breaks up completely when I try to do much of anything else
with the program. It seems to happen most consistently when the screen
changes at all other than typing characters on it -- it even hiccups
when the edit window scrolls by one line here in Mozilla. This isn't
good, and I suspect will be worse and more of a problem when I try to
record from an external source through the device (which was the point
of using the USB device). Weirdly, drakconf still thinks that I'm using
the onboard es1371 AudioPCI97 device.
Can I do something to keep the sound from breaking up?
