Seriously impressed with this!
I intended to just listen briefly but ended up running the whole album.
All
the tracks are good individually, and match well as a set.
Same here. Though I thought the first track to be the weakest. I think
the title track would make a better opener.
I think the mixing is a bit strange. I suspect it's intentional, but I
found the stereo panorama, err, interesting. IMHO the guitar should be
more center, and the bass dead-center anyway, but I guess the setup is
intended to give a vintage, session-in-the-barn feeling. :) Also vocals
are not quite "in front" enough, maybe it's the reverb settings. It all
sounds a bit like the listener was standing right next to the guitar amp
but the rest of the musicians are farther away.
Soundwise (and also in style) it reminds me a lot of "Texas Flood" by
SRV, which is a good thing. Maybe have a listen to that album and see if
any mixing ideas can be had from it?
Still, I enjoyed listening to it as a whole!
Chris

Hi Chris,
Many thanks for listening and for your comments. I would agree that
compared to contemporary mixing my mixes must seem odd, It's not that I'm
a contrarian or have any problem with modern music and mixing at all, but
for this material I wanted to go with the old classic power-trio stage
mix, since as a trio every piece counts I wanted more definition
especially for the bass because it really is what fills in the space and
Pete is a good enough player to deserve his own channel :). Also the track
order was also kind of planned as a live set would go, obviously the first
cut is the most directly blues derivative but in a live show such a song
would be uptempo and a way to say "hey we're here!" and get the audience
involved and let the band warm up a bit before getting to the more
demanding stuff..
Now whether any of this 'works' or not is up to the listener and your
opinion is valued, I just thought I'd explain that much of what you had
commented on was by design.
Again thanks very much for your comments!
Glen
