The SM58 is the 'standard of mediocraty'
for stage vocals. There are
also excellent condenser vocal mics available. I do live sound
regularly, and I see Shure beta 87A's and AKG 535's effectively used
frequently.
Ok, haven't been shopping for live mics for ages (obviously), maybe I
should go with the AKG, that I've actually used alot live (not mine,
belong to a place I play regularly).
I've used a Behringer large diaphragm live and it performed well and
sounded fine. Issues raised about sensitivity and pattern are
significant, and the band along with the venue will make a big
difference in your results.
I like the airy fidelity and crisp intimacy of condensers, but as a
vocalist utilize the proximity effects that familiar dynamics, including
the sm58, deliver.
If you're talking about a small acoustic combo, or a solo act, in a
small club or coffee house, and that doesn't appear to be the case, a
large-diaphragm condenser would be an interesting alternative.
