Other audio apps? There are increasingly few of them :) JACK is a sound
server of sorts, and for many of us its the only thing that talks to the
hardware.
Unfortunately,
if you run the JACK daemon as root you must also run
all its clients that way.
Maybe Jack could switch UIDs and drop privileges after acquiring rt policy?
It needs to keep them so that it can confer the SCHED_FIFO policy onto the
audio threads of client that connect to it.
