OK, I did that, and the system didn't crash

You previously used the OSS drivers (including "audio"). Does your
computer still crash if you run "modprobe snd-usb-audio"?
Yes, it crashed instantly.
This would have been the interesting part.
There are two drivers for UHCI controllers, uhci and usb-uhci.
Sometimes, one of them works and the other one doesn't. Pleasy do
"rmmod usb-uhci" and "modprobe uhci", then try to run lsusb again.
OK, here's the output. One thing I see right away is that it recognized
my digital camera, which hadn't shown up before, so I guess that's an
improvement :-)
The only difference that I see for the USB Audio device itself is that
it seems to have moved from Device 006 to Device 003. But I suspect that
this difference wouldn't have any effect.
I'm seeing some other differences, too:
Whereas I had been getting errors on the Language IDs for various
devices saying, for example,
Language IDs: none (cannot get min. string descriptor; got len=-1,
error=110:Connection timed out)
they're now saying:
Language IDs: none (cannot get min. string descriptor; got len=-1,
error=32:Broken pipe)

If this doesn't help, you can try out a newer version of the usbutils
package.

It seems the UA-30 has switches to select the recording format. Maybe
another combination might work.
[root@localhost mp3]# cat /proc/asound/version
Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 0.9.0rc8.
Compiled on Mar 14 2003 for kernel 2.4.21-0.13mdk with versioned symbols.
This is a shiny new kernel with a rather old ALSA version. Please try
a more recent ALSA version, there have been some changes to the
snd-usb-audio driver since then.
I'm a bit hesitant to do so, since this is the most recent version
supplied for Mandrake. I'm downloading an alsa-driver-0.9.4-fr2 RPM for
i386 from rpmfind, though I'm unclear as to whether it would be better
to download the source RPM and build from that instead.
