i'm searching for a card with just digital i/o to
connect to an external
converter. budget is critical. one possibility we've thought of is the
dio2448, but i've seen also the edirol UA-1D USB:

no info on their site, but a quick google indicates that
the output is resampled, negating quality usage.
the cmi8738 chipset in the dio2448 works well (i have several).
The midiman seems a bit overpriced (~e120) as there are complete motherboards
containing this chipset for less than the price of the midiman:-)
Having said that, i havnt personally found a cheaper card. If you
find something, pls let us know:-)
