Ardour is clearly the best DAW I've used, including some I've used
from Roland.
Sequencers (a la cubase ou logic):

I haven't been able to get MusE to work for me
Rosegarden -

Rosegarden is the best I've used, although I really, really miss
the harmony browser in Jazz++.
Effects (??):
I use LADSPA plugins.

Jack is a must for audio recording.
