It's not a useless interface, since it has got ADAT input. There might
be all kinds of alternatives to connect different computers or other
devices by networks, but ADAT, as well as S/PDIF, AES/EBU and what ever
else of this kind, aren't that fussy, as solutions that require special
network software, for different operating systems. If we get a digital
interface, especially ADAT, we easily could connect different devices by
just plugging optical cables from one to another device. It's better to
have ADAT I/Os, but a device that only has got ADAT inputs is useful,
too.
