Problem solved.
I thought that "Well, it used to work in Windows. So why not try?" and
discovered the same disconnecting behavior...
I had previously used this on USB power alone, and that worked. But
apparently not now. Attaching a power adapter made everything work
again.
Note to self: Try to maybe not to blame software first in the future?
