I've had good luck with timidity for this. My recent album was done with
all timidity + live sax tracks ... just a matter of getting some decent
sound fonts.

Obviously I'd like some nice-sounding results -- I've been trying out
Apple's GarageBand to render some tracks and it does do a good job,
