Issue was solved. For anyone's future reference:
Define pcm and ctl devices in .asoundrc, use the hw:1 "CODEC" device, not the
hw:1,0 subdevice for Jack.
For output volume control need to define a softvol control in .asoundrc
It sounds quite acceptable, BTW.
