Hm, you made me think a little and I found the culprit.
/usr/bin/telnet is a symbolic link on Debian. Somehow it had change from
telnet.nskit to inet.telnet. I changed that and it works again.

You can use $ sudo update-alternatives --config telnet
to keep debian's state clean during package updates.
