I'm trying to set up a fairly minimal system

Several have mentioned avoiding systemd and pulseaudio.
Ubuntu is based on debian and devuan(*1) is debian without
systemd. So deuvan might be an easy way to go. FWIW grandorgue
installed fine in in my devuan daedalus (bookworm) system.
Produced good sound through the ALSA device. I didn't test it
under jack.

FWIW I've been using devuan since it came out. The only problem I've ever
had
was with my own fat-fingering. Currently I have it on all the following:
AMD Ryzen 5 - used exclusively for music creation.
Quite old Intel based laptop - general purpose when travelling.
Slightly newer Intel desktop - development/office stuff/these lists :)
Raspberry Pi 4b - mostly music creation.

Say you have a poem and I have a tune.
Exchange them and we can both have a poem, a tune, and a song.
