Do your jack clients also have to run as root to connect when jack is
run as root? Also is 256 megs of ram enough to run jackd well, or do I
need more like 500megs or more?

Sometimes it runs for a few minutes before doing this...

What do you get if you use
jackd -v -R -a -d alsa -d hw:1 -p 1024 -n 3
running as root.
