FWIW some distros, e.g. Arch don't split packages, IOW headers are
always installed too, but the OP doesn't like to compile. In my
experiences AV Linux makes Debian repository usage tricky. Likely an
Ubuntu Studio LTS is easier to use (with or without e.g. KX PPA).

My needs are very humble: I only use qjackctl, Ardour, Hydrogen
and some LADSPA plugins. I've seen that many people use a plethora
of audio software (which use goes way over my head), but I really
need only something to record guitar and bass, generate some drum
tracks and process it a bit so it hides my awful playing. I hoped I
could do it using standard repos in CentOS, but from the feedback
in this list and some googling, it seems that's not the case.
Why not use
AV-Linux, therewith you have a stable base system, but
closer to stable upstream releases
of audio tools. Beside that it comes with all development tools and
headers, so if it get you, you can build your own stuff without any
hazel. And still it is debian based without follow the "strict"
debian rules.
