My solution was simpler.
I used a kernel-mode http "prefilter" (though a well-built Apache can deal
with it fine as well) to redirect all slashdot referrer hits to a 500 byte
static html file telling the Slashdot lamers to piss off and die.
Even with a small link, you can turn around a ton of such requests per second.
