This had me also
alsamixer > f5 (showall), > far far left "capture" (spacebar toggle
on/off)

I didnt actually fiddle with alsamixer but noticed on a number of
occasions that what i changed elsewhere was certainly reflected by
aslamixer. So while i cant say 100% Im pretty sure its not that one of
them works and the others dont.
