Hello,
Yesterday I was having a little of a debate with a good friend about the
possibilities of Linux/open-source audio and music software in the music
market. What are your opinions about this? Is someone there actually
making money using Linux and/or open-source software? Is it possible to
be competitive in a market full of musicians/composers using
Win/Mac+proprietary software (Cubase, Reason, ProTools and friends)?
Probably this has been addressed more than once previously, so sorry for
insisting... I think I need some encouragement!
I have yet to meet a musician worth listening to who's in it for the
money.
I totally agree!!!
Ask if you can create whatever sort of music you want
with the
available tools maybe, but not if you can make money using open source
software - that's silly.
That aside, Autechre use Max very heavily. Max/MSP isn't free software,
but free parallels/alternatives exist (Pd and Jmax)

I think GNU/Linux should never become too widespread. Otherwise it will
die. It should be an alternative for those who value freedom, those who
aren't afraid to learn. Those who value sharing more than selling and
buying.
Call me leninist. :-D
