Thank you for the reply. The sound card I have is not the HDSP 9652, but the
RME-digi9652, an older card. Perhaps you know that and are still suggesting I use the
hdsp stuff?

try snd-hdsp for the HDSP 9652. This is the Hammerfall driver.
Use hdspmixer instead of alsamixer. Also try hdspconf
