have you tried 3.18.7 lowlatency?
I don't think it is in the repositories for Mint 17.1.
It is not, but it is so easy to install that I definitely would try
this before going to the hazzle to compile your own real time one.
try and then run the realTimeConfigQuickScan
http://wiki.linuxaudio.org/wiki/system_configuration to see if it
solves your issue.
all you need to do is:
(assuming a directory where there is no other .deb file in)
wget
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18.7-vivid/linux-headers-3…
wget
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18.7-vivid/linux-image-3.1…
wget
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.18.7-vivid/linux-headers-3…
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
then reboot.

Max signs a message to a mailing list with a PGP
SIGNATURE and at the
same times recommends to install from a PPA ;). SICR. I would install
from a PPA too, with or without trusted key, but it's too funny that
somebody who feels the need to sign messages to a list recommends to
install from an untrusted repository. Perhaps I'm mistaken and
kernel.ubuntu.com is a trusted Mint repository.
