So the hardware appears to work fine.
So some devices get's created:

udev has correctly recognized the device as an audio/video device.

This usually means:
a) The device-node /dev/raw1394 doesn't exists because you don't have a
/dev/raw1394 would have been used with old kernels.
Try updating libraw1394 (and Jack while you're at it).
Is this the software that came with your distribution (which one)?
