The setup may be difficult, but the control you have is very powerful. Even mplayer can play files to select JACK channels. I believe sndfile has a JACK player, but I've never tried it. You can also configure a JACK plugin in ALSA, if your soundcard is supported by ALSA. That way you can use further commandline players, including aplay and possibly sox and the normal sndfile-play. All of these players have a lot of commandline options and most of them offer good documentation, starting with man pages. Does this help? ...
