PS. I have the same problem on Mandrake, and Debian with new kernels. I remember, than It
worked on Slack 8.0 on my pc.
Seems that you are a kde user.
Kde run from startup the "arts" sound server, it is bad for alsa user.
Go in the sound section of control center of kde and check off ARTS
and restart
you could resolve the problem.
