Hi Michael! You could potentially get away with just using Nautilus - the file manager in GNOME 2 - as that plays sound files as soon as you move your mouse over them but there is another app I struggle to remember the name of right now but its been discussed on this list before so someone will remember it if it doesn't come to me. The app that I think would be best suited to what he wants to do is a audio file preview app thats pretty new so its not in any of the big distro repos that I know of yet but it displays visual previews of all samples contained within specified folders and you can play them back by clicking on the preview - its the 'name that app' challenge! :)
