On reading some older emails about this problem, I realized that
Karsten asked me earlier to post the output of lspci and lsusb,

I know I've heard pretty bad things about these VIA chipsets, especially for audio
stuff, because they tend to hog the bus, but hopefully I can at least make this usable.

Running jackd again after it's given that error seems to pretty
consistantly hang my system completely. Is there any more
advanced debugging I can do to try to track down the problem?
