Rui,
I went through the UbuntuStudioPreparation steps when I first set up my
system. I asked for help on the Ubuntu Studio forum and nobody would
reply. My limits.conf file contains the lines:
@audio - rtprio 99
@audio - memlock 250000
@audio - nice -10
I have no idea what this stuff means but it is there.
And Hartmut, I have a Pentium D 930 Dual-core Processor. I don't think
the ubuntumusique-repo kernel will work with this.
Any more thoughts on what I should do?

Rui,
I clicked 'Applications > Sound & Video > JACK Control' from the
Ubuntu/Gnome GUI as normal user. I do not know what the realtime-lsm
module is or pam security rlimits are. Could you elabourate or direct
me to some reading material?
Unbuntustudio.org might have something for you spending some time
reading. I found this primordial url:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudioPreparation
Don't know if it will do on your particular case, but I guess you'll be
on the right track in adding your regular username to the "audio" group
and check whether your /etc/security/limits.conf file has something
similar as I have on my opensuse boxes, like the following:
@audio - rtprio 90
@audio - nice -10
@audio - memlock 4000000
Bye.
