I fun way to get started for cheap is to get the "Midi Projects for
Musicans" kit, I have the book, but you can get a kit with it to build
your own custom midi controller for pretty cheap.

Hee-hee! I'd very much like to take a shot at it.
Have you looked at the *prices* of most of these boxes? $500 and up. I
don't have that kind of money.
Now I am reading it to find out if it uses an EPROM and see if I can
have him burn me a few for a few dollars.
