Yes, that's an alternative to the batch processing.
But I still search a programm that automatically stops recording when
there is a long period of silence.
A quick look at the ecasound manpage gives the
"-ge:open-threshold-%, ..." option with the interesting property of
truncating audio buffer's length to zero when the gate is closed again.
Maybe this can be abused to your needs?
