I just upgraded from 2.6.9 to 2.6.11 (both vanilla) and the occational
pop is gone. That leaves me with 5.8ms of latency, which is acceptable
for now. If I get a need-for-speed or get into trouble I'll get back.

Looks like you use ACPI. There was a serious ACPI bug fixed in 2.6.10
that would have caused those xruns.
