the relevant output is really what this command says:
cat /proc/asound/cards
the complication is that some devices have multiple PCM devices on a single
card. then it gets a bit more complex. but in the common case, the "one to
pick" is hw:CARDNAME (as described here:
http://jackaudio.org/device_naming
OK; my /proc/asound/cards file reads:
0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfe024000 irq 21
1 [AF ]: USB-Audio - VF0560 Live! Cam Optia AF
Creative Labs VF0560 Live! Cam Optia AF at
usb-0000:00:02.1-3, high speed
2 [M2496 ]: ICE1712 - M Audio Audiophile 24/96
M Audio Audiophile 24/96 at 0xac00, irq 16
have you tried
aplay -D hw:M2496 /path/to/an/actual/wav/file/on/your/system.wav
(changing the file name appropriately, of course)?
The command:
aplay -D hw:M2496 strauss-ein_heldenleben-03.wav
yields:
Playing WAVE 'strauss-ein_heldenleben-03.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian,
Rate 44100 Hz, Stereo
aplay: set_params:1081: Sample format non available
Available formats:
- S32_LE
the problem is that you may *also* need to play with
the h/w mixer
settings. envy24control is a better program for that with the 2496 than any
of the standard generic mixer tools (and it has meters too).
So it does. The tabs on envy24control read:
Monitor Inputs
Monitor PCMs (all eight channels up all the way)
Patchbay/Router
Hardware Settings
Analog Volume (up all the way)
Profiles
Anything you suggest I play with? Thanks!
