The graphics stuff is more of a problem, as it more or less needs the
propietary ATI drivers, which are not good. The propietary nVidia ones are
better IME.
If you don't need fancy graphics you can use the vesa2.0 framebuffer driver
and let X output to fbdev. That way I did configure X without getting a
headache about the graphic-chip...
