Did you load a sound font?
Also, when running rosegarden, I hear nothing
when I press the test tone
button on the GUI for the fluidsynth DSSI.
I do see that the /dev/midi* devices are there.
Are there wavetable ports in the output of "amidi -l" and/or
"aplaymidi -l"?

Hello, Clemens,
Yes, audio is working fine with jack (well except for some overruns); it is
only MIDI that's the problem. Thanks to you and the others, I have something
to go on - it had been a while since I dealt with this stuff, so I needed
people to jog my memory. Thanks!
I realized I confused the issue by mentioning the rosegarden-fluidsynth-DSSI
problem, which has in retrospect nothing to do with MIDI, and for which I
will do some more poking around, or simply try the stand-alone fluidsynth.
