Hello!
Does alsa allow several programs to use one device, with soft mixing?
Not really. But Jack, which runs on top of Alsa, does. fluidsynth
supports JAck, as well as ither soft synths like amSynth and
ZynAddSubFx.
Actually it does but the apps should have native alsa support and it
needs to be fairly recent.
You can use the dmix plugin
I have used it with xmms.
There is documentation available on the .asoundrc page via the soundcard
matrix at
alsa-project.org.
The jack plugin for xmms has been broken by recent jack cvs changes but
the author is planning to get it working again when he has time.
Also I second Ico's suggestion to use libjackasyn.

Being on stage with the band in front of crowds shouting, "Get off! No!
We want normal music!", I think that was more like acting than anything
I've ever done.
